Charles "Ward's next and most controversial move was to bring out a little something different: a bit of seriousness. The "composer series" was born, and the shouting spawned from this move made the previous cries of protest sound like Bernard Gunter watching sand breathe. 7" records by John Cage (First Construction (In Metal), no less!), Iannis Xenakis, David Tudor, Gordon Mumma, hell, there's even a split with Christian Wolff and Krystoff Pendrecki! Natually, people initially cried fake. These couldn't possibly be real. How the hell did this guy get rights to press a 7" of First Construction (In Metal)? John Cage has a sense of humor, but I bet his estate doesn't. Ward, unaccustomed as he was to getting such negative reactions to his heartfelt product, and wanting to give the public the whole truth, released a document from the Mills College Music Library, saying that these recordings were indeed genuine. What he didn't mention was whether or not he was given the right to actually release them. Those in the know say the recordings are of extremely shoddy sound, and many of the 'pieces' sound like outtakes, mistakes, or throwaways collected out of the wastebaskets before the cleaning people got back."
