Welcome to the John Cage discography.

Since April 2001 this discography has been on the internet, initially a database of available recordings with music by John Cage. But for several reasons I decided to make a complete discography out of my initial list. In the summer of 2001 I embarked on a project that seemed endless, since hundreds of recordings had to be inserted and up to this day I am quite sure that  there is more, on small record labels, all around the world.

I am aware of the fact that New Albion has an excellent discography on their site, but I wasn't satisfied by the fact that it wasn't updated. My goal is to update this site as often as I can, to put new releases in a special frame, give information about future releases and of course to give as much information as I could find on existing and all other recordings.

The information on recordings contains:

Record label and serial number (including recording type. If this is not listed, it is a CD)
Picture of the cover (if available)
Title of recording (found on the sleeve side)
Contents of the record
Performers
Recording details
Year (sometimes also month) of release

Some words on how to use the discography:

The left frame functions as a navigation frame. The are several possibilities for searching the discography:

Through the names of record labels
Through the name of an organisation (in the case of non-commercial recordings)
Through the name of a work (alphabetically or chronologically)
Through the name of a performer or ensemble
New entries
Future releases

The middle frame gives, depending on the chosen navigation, names of record labels, titles of works or information on new releases. By clicking the links in this frame one get more details on the recordings made by these labels, or all recordings made of the chosen work, or more details on the chosen new release.

The upper right frame also depends on the chosen navigation. In case of 'record labels' and 'new releases' it gives all recordings made by this specific label. In case of 'title of the composition' it shows the recordings made of this work.

The lower right frame always gives detailed information on the specific recording.

Colors and abbreviations

The use of a red font type in the upper right frame, as well as a red background in the lower right frame, means that a recording is no longer available.
On using the 'works' navigation, this is shown in the upper right frame by using the abbreviation n.l.a. (no longer available). In all other cases recordings are still available. They might not be easy to get sometimes. In some cases I added a possible source, where to find it.
Orange font type (upper right frame) and orange background (both right frames) refer to non-commercial recordings, usually not for sale, but available through various organisations and libraries.

Sources

This discography mainly contains recordings I actually saw or have in my collection. Other invaluable sources were the online catalogs of several American (University) Libraries. The following catalogs were researched:

And of course the New Albion Discography has been a major source.

In some cases I only saw announcements of the recordings on the internet and sometimes I got the information from other people. Starting point for the recordings which are no longer available, was the New Albion site. Some of their recordings might be questionable. In this case I mention my doubts.
Recently (October 2002) I added missing information based on Paul van Emmerik's Discography in the German "John Cage - Musik-Konzepte Sonderband II" (ISBN 3-88377-315-8) ©1990. He mentions some more release dates as well as a few recordings, not included in my earlier version of the discography.

In the future I hope to add sources to every recording.

Please help me!!

I would really like to keep this discography as updated and actual as possible. Fortunately some people already send me information every now and then. I would like to encourage everyone to send information on missing, new and future releases to my e-mail address:
